Saturday Diversions

February 2, 2008

To free my mind from the horrors of days past, I have allowed some distractions to scratch the itches of my 30-year old nature.

Magazines

I’ve previously mentioned about the magazines I bought from BookSale. Well I’ve read through some back issues of OUT. The April 2007 issue had America Ferrera of the Ugly Betty show on its cover, along with Eric Mabius (Daniel Meade) and Michael Urie (the gay Marc). I do love the show, not only because my sister Ken and my former roommate Diane were so engrossed by it, but also because I somehow understood why Betty Suarez had become a gay icon.

Another issue of OUT had Iman and Michael Kors on the cover. They were part of the 100 men and women who rocked 2006. The magazine honored the supermodel Iman as the humanitarian of the year for her contribution in making people aware of the ‘Keep a Child Alive’ cause, while Michael Kors was 2006’s Stylemaker of the Year.

The July 2007 issue of INSTINCT featured former model Mike Ruiz and his current stint as a filmmaker and a photographer, as interviewed by RuPaul. Featured also in the magazine were the drag queens who made it into the comedy bar circuits. Some of them were Jackie Beat, Hedda Lettuce and Cashetta.

Then there’s this August 07 Sex issue of The Advocate with Ian Roberts. The man on the cover was a retired Australian rugby player who is now prancing up the path to an acting career. Aside from his personal story of coming out, he also talked about his experience of fostering a homeless twink who was into drugs and prostitution. What he’d gone through with the lad was akin to the storyline of Ben and Michael of Queer as Folk who adopted and “cultured” a homeless kid.

I got hold of a MetroSource Magazine. It was a mid 2007 issue about being proud and out. The magazine was about celebrating pride and the ex NBA player John Amaechi was featured along with Rufus Wainwright, Chef David Lawrence and Kelly Rowland (uhmm, she’s basically female).

Jessica Zafra

I’ve been following Jessica Zafra for years. I used to be the biggest stalker of the bespectacled talented writer. I watched her show at Studio 23 and I bought the broadsheets everyday and read her column. When we had our ‘educational’ trip to thestudio of ABS CBN,  I even sat on her most favorite chair in the set of her show. That was in college. Back then, it was cool.

Since college, I had a collection of her TWISTED books. Her articles were interesting, informative, and humorous in a different way. Last night, I dropped by PowerBooks in SM Cebu and asked if they have a copy of Twisted8. Well luckily, they ran out of stocks. So I ended up buying Tw7sted.

I don’t know where my other twisted books are now. I normally lend it to my friends after I finished reading them. I couldn’t find them in the house anymore. And I’m almost done reading the 7th TWISTED book. It’s nice to know that the aspiring world dominatrix has a huge crush on Russell Crowe.

Blogger Jeremy

Jeremy’s adult web log is one of my favorite sites to visit. Jeremy is a bear, quite similar to my petit ami. His blog is about the people he had worked with on the set of RandyBlue and also some other topics that are somehow related to the porn industry. He works as a photographer for the film outfit. At times he also directs films.

I was quite shocked today when I visited his blog and found out that he posted his personal video there. He previously posted the clip in dudetube and now, it’s in his blog. When I watched his footage, I couldn’t quite figure if I was amused or distracted by the sheer size of it. My reaction was like similar to the moment I discovered that Chris Rockway finally ‘bottomed’ for RandyBlue. Perhaps I may have gotten too excited that I called up Bro Bear and told him about what I just saw.  Bro Bear and I were speechless after we saw the whole clip.

The Chicken and the Eunuch’s Belly

Mom is a candid teaser. We had chicken liver and corned beef for lunch. She said that she was tired and she was in no mood to cook something decent. And so she forced us to eat chicken liver. Now I am not an avid eater of such. There’s a funny taste that is associated with that particular blood purifier part. I’d rather eat poultry gizzard than the liver.

Mom said that it’s easier to prepare the liver than the gizzard. The latter must have to be properly washed and cleaned before they would be cooked. She claimed that gizzards have high uric acid content. I was able to munch a pair of chicken liver. But then that was it. I couldn’t eat another more. Good thing she sautéed a can of corned beef. It saved my day.

After lunch, I sat on a couch across the tube and I switched to CNN for some dose of documentaries. After Anderson Cooper 360º, a documentary on Bombay’s eunuchs was on. It was a sad feature about the plight of the hijras in one of India’s big cities.

Most of them got involved in prostitution. Most of them had come to terms with reality that no man would ever love them for what they are, for the men would just leave them anyhow to marry a real woman and bear him children.

One of the castrati demonstrated the steps on how to wear the sari. He was talking about his experience in riding public transport and his fears on how men would react if they found out that he’s not really a woman. As he held the long tunic and began to fold a portion of the fabric, I notice his huge dark belly. I was fascinated by the way the folded sari was placed around his waist, over his huge belly and across his shoulder.

The hijra’s belly was sticking out. Little did I know that mom was walking towards me and she began to laugh. I thought she was laughing about the eunuch, but then she went to me and pressed her index finger and said “hala kadako na sa imo tiyan” (lo, your belly’s big now).

I wasn’t able to react. Had I a sari in my hand, I would wrap it immediately around and over my swollen tummy. Of course mom continued to laugh as she exited the family room. I wanted to wrap the sari around my head too.

Driving Ms. Candid Teaser

I drove my mom to a nearby department store. She needed to buy some items for the house. Dad and his officemates would be using the house next week for some video shots. His company would be hiring a professional filmmaker and they would be shooting several scenes in the house.

Well I got scared. I knew for a fact that dad and his co-workers would take part on the project as actors. Dad called us up today and told us that he’s been given additional parts. He said one of his roles is an attorney. And he would be wearing a ‘barong tagalog’ or a suit for that scene.

I was wondering about what mask to wear the moment the camera begins to roll. They would be making a film on domestic and factory safety, and they were given only 3 days to shoot. Dad will be going to Indonesia this month to present the film to his officemates in Jakarta.

Going back to Ms. Candid Teaser that is my mom, well I got even with her (or so i thought) while we were on our way to the department store. Mom had a fear of anything that is moving fast. In short, she’s afraid of riding a car with a fast driver. When I pulled out ZeeWee from the driveway, I assured her that I would be driving really slow.

I said it while deliberately stepping on the gas. A few moments later, we had a calm conversation, but then her hearbeat rose a bit when she noticed that the speedometer indicated 60. She stopped in her words and she placed her hand on her chest and began to pant.

I just looked at her and smiled. I thought that she got scared of the 60kph. When I looked at the road again, I began to step on the brakes and moved the car a bit to the middle of the road and avoided the car which about to enter my lane. It was actually pretty close to a disaster. I was driving Ms. Candid Teaser Crazy.

Well, at least distractions abound today. I’ll be going back to the city tonight for a cup of coffee with my high school friends.

Nice website, there’s plenty of good information here!

I have a DVD website. Perhaps you could take a look when you get time. It covers plenty to do with DVDs.

You can find information on theatre, entertainment and film news also. Region 2/0 DVDs are very cheap.
